There will be an important public meeting in Tourmakeady hall, on Wednesday, September 1, at 8.30 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the notice of intention to designate a Special Protection Area (SPA) here in this area. Councillor Al McDonnell will chair the meeting. It is possible that these proposals could affect us all so in your own interests do make sure that you attend.

Partry heritage day on Sunday
THE first ever Partry heritage day will be held on Sunday, August 29, starting at 2 p.m.
A great day is assured and weather permitting, it will be a wonderful family day out for everyone. Events which will be taking place include a vintage display, crafts, bouncing castles, guided tours, guess the weight of the lamb and pony and trap rides. There will be great prizes for the best costume on the day. Partry house is the place to be on August 29.
Mini céilí
A BACK to school mini céilí will be held in Tourmakeady hall, on Thursday, September 2, with the mighty Tee Cee Sound. Refreshments will be served and there will be dancing from 10 p.m. to 12 midnight. Everyone is welcome.
GAA weekly lotto results
THERE were no outright winners of the Tourmakeady GAA weekly lotto draw, held on Saturday, August 21. The numbers drawn were 3, 8, 15 and 20. The consolation winners were Tom Whelan, Trianlar; Emma Gibbons, Marian O’Malley, Srah; Noreen Gibbons, Lough Mask Inn and Ciara O’Toole, Cappaduff. The next lotto draw, for €9,300 is on Saturday, August 28. Tickets cost €2 each or three for €5 and are on sale throughout the parish.

Bereavements
THE death has taken place of Brid Carney, Srah, Tourmakeady. Her remains were removed on Tuesday, August 24, at 10.30 a.m. to Tourmakeady church, for 11 a.m. Mass. Burial takes place afterwards. May her soul rest in peace.
Also the death has taken place in the loving care of her husband and family, at the Mayo General Hospital, of Mrs. Mona Heneghan, Goirtin Mór, Tourmakeady, formerly Mona McManamon, Newport Road, Castlebar.
In her 60th year, Mona was in ill health for some time. She was a well liked, pleasant, caring and concerned lady, who loved to help and share her kindness. Her husband and family and faith were important to her. She was a strong believer in the sacraments.
Prior to her illness, Mona was very much involved in the Tourmakeady prayer group. She was a member of the Eucharistic Ministers and she started the weekly holy hour in St. Mary’s, Tourmakeady.
Large crowds attended her funeral from many parts. Her remains were removed from her residence in Goirtinmore to Tourmakeady church, on Thursday, August 19. St. Mary’s church was once again packed for the 11 a.m. Mass, celebrated on Friday, August 20, by Fr. John Kenny p.p. He was assisted by Fr. Desmond Grogan and Fr. Frank Fahey, Ballintubber Abbey. He gave a lovely, meaningful homily at the Mass. Sr. Aine Marie-Vana and John Joyce gave a beautiful communion reflection.
Mona was laid to rest in the new cemetery, Castlebar. She is survived by her husband Tom, daughters Orla, Olga and Maire-Vana, sons Michael and John, sisters Mary, Bea, Joan and Cait; brothers Sean and Michael and also sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and extended family. May her soul rest with the Lord.
Junior angling shield
TOURMAKEADY junior angling shield competition will take place on Saturday, August 28; leaving Churchfield Bay, at 11 a.m. All anglers are asked to please check-in at 10.30 a.m. sharp.
On Sunday, August 29, it is ladies day on Lough Mask and a big crowd is expected. All boats leave Churchfield Bay, at 11 a.m. and everyone is welcome.
Annual coffee evening
THE annual coffee evening at the Tourmakeady hall will be held early in September. All proceeds will go to cancer care and Mayo/Roscommon Hospice.

Mayo sire takes top Irish draught championship
IN one of the biggest turnouts for the Irish draught stallion class, at the R.D.S. in many years, 14 of the best known Irish draught sires paraded before Judge Richard Matson, a lifelong Irish draught breeder. He was emphatic about what he was looking for in the Irish draught classes; namely bone, substance and movement. Richard Matson and his co-judge Liz Morley, not only found these qualities in their Irish draught champion Gortfee Hero, from the initial line-up; they reversed their first two placings and brought up their eighth placed sire to third place. They gave the red to Seán Barker’s Gortfree Hero, an eight year old chestnut by Castana, out of the Uibh Fháilí 81 (R.I.D.) dam Princess Royale. Seán hails from Treanlaur, Tourmakeady.
Everyone who sent cards and messages of congratulations and turned out to welcome Gortfree Hero home is thanked. Gúr a Mile Máith agaibh go Leir.
New baby boy
CONGRATULATIONS to Linda and Ger Doherty, Tullamore and Tourmakeady, on the birth of their baby son last week. He is a welcome brother for Molly and grandson for Noreen and Sean O’Shea, Tourmakeady.

Bereavement
THE death has taken place of Breege O’Malley, Drimcoggy, Srah, in her 89th year and following a short illness.
She was born in Gortnacullin, Srah, to William and Bridget O’Malley. They moved to nearby Drimcoggy, in the late 1950s.
Breege was a hard worker, quiet but concerned for her parents until their passing. She continued caring for the household. Her brother Martin passed in 2002. She had a special love for her niece and nephew, Helen and Liam, together with their mother Eileen.
She was a great cook, gardener and housekeeper, with great faith and who attended Mass regularly.
Large crowds attended her funeral on both days. On Saturday, August 14, her remains were removed to St. Mary’s church, Tourmakeady, from St. Mary’s funeral home. Burial took place on Sunday, after 11.30 a.m. Mass, celebrated by Fr. John Kenny p.p. Readings were given by Liam and Helen O’Malley, nephew and niece. The paslm was given by Eileen O’Malley, cousin. Reflection was given by John Keane, nephew. Breege will be missed. She is survived by Eileen, her sister-in-law, Helen and Liam O’Malley, sisters Nora, Peggy and Kathleen; brothers Sean and Liam; brother-in-law; sisters-in-law; cousins, nieces and nephews and also extended family members. May her soul rest in peace.

TOURMAKEADY senior team play Castlebar Mitchels, in the Mayo senior league, in Castlebar, at the weekend, of August 28 and 29. They will play either Kiltimagh, Ballyhaunis or Kilmaine, with a semi-final play awaiting the winners.

ON stage at Máire Lukes Bar and Restaurant, Tourmakeady, on Wednesday, August 18, is The Bumble Bee.

THE death took place recently in Birmingham, England, of Mrs. Margaret Maguire, formerly Margaret Meeneghan, sister of the late Tom Meeneghan, Gortfree, Tourmakeady and aunt of Mary O’Brien, The Neale and Tommie Meeneghan, Carheen and Galway. May her soul rest in peace.

Wedding bells
THE marriage took place on Friday, August 6, of Mr. Anthony McCusker, son of Mary and Brian McCusker, Treen, Tourmakeady and Ms. Sarah Madden.
The ceremony was performed at Ballintubber Abbey, by Fr. Padraig Standún p.p. Carna, Co. Galway. Chief bridesmaid was Orla Gahan. Bridesmaids were Anna Molloy, Leanne Broderick and Trudi Faulkner. Best man was Jonathan Egan. Groomsmen were Darragh Shields, Conleth Murphy and Seamus Carter. Flower girl was Juliet Murphy. Readings were given by Neil Madden and Aine Walsh. Music was presented by Jeremy Morgan and Tomas Langan. Following the official duties at Ballintubber Abbey, the reception was held and enjoyed at Lisloughrey House, Cong. Best wishes and a long life to Sarah and Anthony for the future.
Lough Mask swim challenge
THE second annual Lough Mask swim challenge takes place on Sunday, September 5. The 8k from Ballinrobe to Paddy’s, Tourmakeady, will be arriving at 1 p.m. and more details will be provided later.

THERE were no outright winners of the Tourmakeady GAA lotto of August 7. The numbers chosen were 15, 20, 27 and 32. The consolation winners were Tomas Burke, An Fhairche; Darren Ronan, Cappaduff; Tom Gibbons, Lough Mask Inn; Joe Grimes, Partry and Eileen Derrig, Castlebar. The jackpot now stands at €9,000. Tickets cost €2 each or three for €5 and are on sale throughout the parish.

A MINI céilí will be held on Thursday, September 2, in Tourmakeady hall. Music is by Tee Cee Sound. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served.
Bereavement
THE death has taken place of Breege O’Malley, Drimcoggy, Srah, in her 89th year and following a short illness.
She was born in Gortnacullin, Srah, to William and Bridget O’Malley. They moved to nearby Drimcoggy, in the late 1950s.
Breege was a hard worker, quiet but concerned for her parents until their passing. She continued caring for the household. Her brother Martin passed in 2002. She had a special love for her niece and nephew, Helen and Liam, together with their mother Eileen.
She was a great cook, gardener and housekeeper, with great faith and who attended Mass regularly.
Large crowds attended her funeral on both days. On Saturday, August 14, her remains were removed to St. Mary’s church, Tourmakeady, from St. Mary’s funeral home. Burial took place on Sunday, after 11.30 a.m. Mass, celebrated by Fr. John Kenny p.p. Readings were given by Liam and Helen O’Malley, nephew and niece. The paslm was given by Eileen O’Malley, cousin. Reflection was given by John Keane, nephew. Breege will be missed. She is survived by Eileen, her sister-in-law, Helen and Liam O’Malley, sisters Nora, Peggy and Kathleen; brothers Sean and Liam; brother-in-law; sisters-in-law; cousins, nieces and nephews and also extended family members. May her soul rest in peace.

Local two gold medal winner at horse show, R.D.S Dublin
CONGRATULATIONS to Mr. Sean Barker, Trianlar, Tourmakeady, Co. Mayo. Last weekend was a special time for the man of the Gaeltach, as a horse owned by Sean took away two gold medals at the R.D.S. Dublin.
He won first in a competitive event, for registered Irish Draught Stallions. The champion was named Gortfree Hero, who also took gold in the perpetual champion trophy.
A big crowd welcomed Gortfree Hero and the Barker family home, with a bonfire, at the Tourmakeady GAA park, on Sunday.
Whilst this was taking place another anniversary was to the forefront of the mind of Sean Barker. He married Eileen Coyne, Shanvalleycahil, Tourmakeady, in August 1985. Sean and Eileen have three in family William, Shauna and Emma. Well done to all concerned.
Intermediate team success
TOURMAKEADY intermediate team marched into the Mayo quarter-finals, with a hard fought but well-deserved victory over Hollymount, in Hollymount, on Saturday. The final score was Tourmakeady 0-7 to Hollymount 0-6.
The winners had a great performance throughout, with young Tom Staunton getting man of the match, with his never say die attitude.
Tourmakeady top the table with six points, from all three games played away from home.

PARTRY Athletic soccer team had a great double in 48 hours at home. On Thursday, they defeated neighbours Ballinrobe, in the Gold Cup, quarter-final, 3-1 on penalties. On Saturday, they defeated Ballyglass 2-1, in the premier league.
Cead Mile Failte
A CEAD Mile Failte to visitors to Tourmakeady for the annual Ceol Na Locha, which got underway, on Monday, August 9, at Colaiste Muire, in Tuar Mhic Eadaigh.
Classes in many instruments are taking place and also Sean Nós dancing. Also Ealaín Comhra agus Amhrán Gaeilge classes each day until 1.30 p.m.
Every night throughout the week, seisun ceol will be held in all the different outlets in Tuar Mhic Eadaigh. The highlight will be the launch of a new CD, by Máire Staunton, entitled Circle of Friends, at Paddy’s Bar and Restaurant, on Wednesday, August 11.
Everyone is welcome. Special guests on the night include Dé Dannon, who also produced the CD. It is advisable to be early to get a seat.

Irish speakers for Mo Theach Do Theach
WADDELL Media are seeking applications from Irish speakers for Mo Theach Do Theach, (My House, Your House), a six part series funded by the Irish Language Broadcast Fund, for TG4. Local two gold medal winner at horse show, R.D.S Dublin
CONGRATULATIONS to Mr. Sean Barker, Trianlar, Tourmakeady, Co. Mayo. Last weekend was a special time for the man of the Gaeltach, as a horse owned by Sean took away two gold medals at the R.D.S. Dublin.
He won first in a competitive event, for registered Irish Draught Stallions. The champion was named Gortfree Hero, who also took gold in the perpetual champion trophy.
A big crowd welcomed Gortfree Hero and the Barker family home, with a bonfire, at the Tourmakeady GAA park, on Sunday.
Whilst this was taking place another anniversary was to the forefront of the mind of Sean Barker. He married Eileen Coyne, Shanvalleycahil, Tourmakeady, in August 1985. Sean and Eileen have three in family William, Shauna and Emma. Well done to all concerned.
Intermediate team success
TOURMAKEADY intermediate team marched into the Mayo quarter-finals, with a hard fought but well-deserved victory over Hollymount, in Hollymount, on Saturday. The final score was Tourmakeady 0-7 to Hollymount 0-6.
The winners had a great performance throughout, with young Tom Staunton getting man of the match, with his never say die attitude.
Tourmakeady top the table with six points, from all three games played away from home.
Partry residents bonus number game
WELL done to Pat Roberts, Killkerran and Jackie Heneghan, Clonee, on winning the Partry residents bonus number game, on August 7. They each win €100 for having number 31. There will be more winners on Saturday, August 14.

Double for Partry Athletics soccer team
PARTRY Athletic soccer team had a great double in 48 hours at home. On Thursday, they defeated neighbours Ballinrobe, in the Gold Cup, quarter-final, 3-1 on penalties. On Saturday, they defeated Ballyglass 2-1, in the premier league.
Cead Mile Failte
A CEAD Mile Failte to visitors to Tourmakeady for the annual Ceol Na Locha, which got underway, on Monday, August 9, at Colaiste Muire, in Tuar Mhic Eadaigh.
Classes in many instruments are taking place and also Sean Nós dancing. Also Ealaín Comhra agus Amhrán Gaeilge classes each day until 1.30 p.m.
Every night throughout the week, seisun ceol will be held in all the different outlets in Tuar Mhic Eadaigh. The highlight will be the launch of a new CD, by Máire Staunton, entitled Circle of Friends, at Paddy’s Bar and Restaurant, on Wednesday, August 11.
Everyone is welcome. Special guests on the night include Dé Dannon, who also produced the CD. It is advisable to be early to get a seat.

GAA weekly lotto results
THERE was no outright winner of the Tourmakeady GAA weekly lotto draw. The numbers chosen were 14, 18, 22 and 30. The consolation winners were Pat Thornton, Carheen and U.S.A. Peader O’Cathain, Pairc A Doire and Mary O’Mahoney, at (087) 9015280. There will be more winners on Saturday, August 14. Tickets cost €2 or €5 for three and are on sale throughout the parish.
Repeat reunion
LAST weekend, was the eighth anniversary since the hugely enjoyable Tourmakeady parish reunion, which was held in 2002. Bereavement
SYMPATHY is extended to the Bourke families, Partry, on the death of Paddy Bourke, Kilfaul, Partry. Removal took place on Wednesday, July 28, to St. Mary’s church, Partry. Burial took place in Ballyovey cemetery, after 11 a.m. Mass, in St. Mary’s. Paddy is survived by his brother Jimmy, sister Maura, nieces, nephews, extended family and neighbours. Bereavement
SYMPATHY is extended to the Bourke families, Partry, on the death of Paddy Bourke, Kilfaul, Partry. Removal took place on Wednesday, July 28, to St. Mary’s church, Partry. Burial took place in Ballyovey cemetery, after 11 a.m. Mass, in St. Mary’s. Paddy is survived by his brother Jimmy, sister Maura, nieces, nephews, extended family and neighbours. May his soul rest in peace.

THE annual Ceol Na Locha will take place in Coláiste Mhuire, Tourmakeady, week commencing Monday, August 9 to Friday August 13. The Scoil Ceol will be held through Irish, at Coláiste Mhuire, with the Seisun Ceol every evening, in the various venues in the Tourmakeady area. THE Tourmakeady youth club and Óige na Gaeltachta have organised another Summer Camp in Tourmakeady. The camp will be full of energy, fun, sport and craic. Activities will include music, art, soccer, volleyball, treasure hunt and a day trip out. Activities will be through Irish. All participants will be getting an Óige na Gaeltachta T-shirt. The date is Monday August 16 to Friday August 20. Tourmakeady victory
TOURMAKEADY had a great 1-7 to 0-6 victory over Belmullet, in Belmullet, on Sunday. Tourmakeady is safe in division one.
Bereavement
THE death occurred of Tommy Heneghan, Srah, Tourmakeady, on Friday, July 16, at the Mayo General Hospital, in his 77th year and following an illness.
He was known locally as Tommy Murray, owing to the number of Heneghans in the parish.
Tommy was a quietly spoken, hard working man and a member of the Mayo County Council road works for 50 years.
In the pre-taxi ere Tommy was the driver for dancers in Pontoon, Tooreen, Cummer or French Hill, two or three nights a week.
He loved a game of cards and the odd pint. He always remembered the Lenten and November fasts.
Large crowds attended his final farewell and his remains reposed and removed from St. Mary’s funeral home, Tourmakeady, to the local church. Burial took place in the adjoining cemetery, after Mass celebrated by Fr. John Kenny p.p. assisted by Fr. Desmond Grogan.
The readings were given by Jim Heneghan, nephew of Tommy, Chicago. Prayers of the faithful were given by Fiona and Sandra. Requiem songs were presented by the Srah choir, with Tomas O’Máille giving a memorable grave side song.
Tommy is survived by his sisters Nancy, Srah; Mary, Catherine and Eileen, all Chicago; brothers Jimmie and Paddy, both Chicago; sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, cousins, neighbours and friends. May his soul rest in peace.
Partry residents bonus number game winner
THE latest winner of the Partry residents bonus number game was Richie Heneghan, with number eight, giving him €100. The next draw is on Saturday, July 31.

EDDIE Gibbons will read at the 8.30 p.m. Mass on Saturday. Eucharistic Ministers are Kathleen Staunton and Carmel Garvey. Siobhan De Burca will read at the 11.30 a.m. Mass on Sunday. Eucharistic Ministers are Martin O’Neill and Patricia Heneghan. Rose, Mary and Noreen are on church care week.
Football and festival
ON Saturday, August 1, the Tourmakeady GAA football and festival will take place.
The programme consists of the Under 14 football game between Tourmakeady and Moy Davitts, at 3 p.m. Tourmakeady ladies team take on Michéal Breathnach, of Galway, at 4.30 p.m. The Gaeltarra Cup is at 6 p.m. when Tuar Mhic Eadaigh take on Headford. On Sunday night, the kick-off is at 8 p.m. at the Lough Mask Inn, Tourmakeady. There is a traditional evening of music and song, with all local musicians welcome at 10 p.m. Phase will be on stage for the open air concert and barbecue and a great day’s entertainment is assured, with a draw taking place. Prizes include two All-Ireland football tickets; 20 pieces of 12oz striploin steaks; a one tonne bag of seasoned firewood; six months gym membership for two people, at the McWilliam Park Hotel; a €100 leisure centre voucher, for the Castlecourt Hotel; a €50 fuel voucher, from Ballintubber Stores, plus other prizes on the night. A combined ticket for the concert, the draw and the barbecue costs €10 and tickets are on sale throughout the parish. Everyone is asked to support the club.

THE people of Tourmakeady extend thanks and appreciation to the S.S.T group, Tourmakeady, for their great work on both Churchfield and Tourmakeady cemeteries, for the open air Mass.

ON stage at Máire Lukes Bar and Restaurant, Tourmakeady, on Wednesday, July 28, is The Bumble Bee. On Friday, July 30, the brilliant Paddy Hoban show will take place and on Sunday, August 1, from 8.30 p.m. to midnight, there is the entertainment show. TOURMAKEADY intermediate footballers travel to play Hollymount, on Saturday, July 31, in the final game of the round robin series. A draw for Tourmakeady will put them into the Mayo quarter-finals, on September 5.
Pride of Place competition
FRIDAY, July 30, is an important day for the people of Partry, as the Pride of Place competition will be taking place.
The work of various organisations will be adjudicated upon, including the Partry residents association, the anglers, the Kilkerran residents, the soccer club, the community centre and many more.
An open invitation is extended to everyone to be at the community centre, Partry, at 5.30 p.m. sharp, on Friday, July 30. The presentation of the Pride of Place will be given at 6 p.m. Good luck is extended to everyone involved and a lovely evening is assured. THE Partry Athletic soccer weekly bonus number game winner was Kieran Hennessy, Kilkerran, with number eight. It was his second win in three weeks.
