The community of Tourmakeady did itself proud with their support for the Mayo People of the Year Award 2014. The award ceremony took place in the Great National Breaffy House Hotel, Castlebar. The massive number of messages received personally and by phone, by facebook, by card gave a real presence and energy to what was a wonderful evening of recognition of the community development that is taking place and in all areas of Tourmakeady. Thank you for being there and thank you to those who nominated me for this award because it is not ‘a me award’ it is ‘an our award’ because everyone has given and shared their encouragement, input and support over many many years. It was a great evening with so many friends present and it was a pleasant surprise meeting the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, Dara Calleary TD and Michelle Mulherin,TD and to hear their words of support for Tourmakeady. dee.

Deirdre Cavanagh, Tourmakeady would like to sincerely thank all those who took the trouble to put me forward for this prestigious award.  To be nominated for Mayo Person of the Year is quite overwhelming and I feel very humbled and privileged.  Coming home to Tourmakeady was to retire but somehow it never happened.   I have made so many new friends who are very special to me and who have helped and guided me over the years.  I have at my age had an amazing opportunity to work with many wonderful people in the community which has been very rewarding. During our work here there has been involvement with many different agencies that support community development.   I have been fortunate to be encouraged, helped and mentored through the years and have learned so much.  I would love to name names but there is always the risk that I might miss someone out.  However I am sure that you will understand if I thank my darling husband Mike for all the support he has given to me and my beloved parents down through the years. I would also like to thank everyone who has been in touch and offered their congratulations.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.  To finish thank you daddy for giving me my deep love of Tourmakeady and beautiful Glensaul.

Week ending 2nd November 2015
