Official opening of the Hall
The hall will be officially opened on Friday October 15 at 3.00pm by Minister Éamon Ó Cuív – more details to follow.
Halla Tuar Mhic Éadaigh - an update
The hall was previously held in trust by the Diocese of Tuam on behalf of the community of Tourmakeady. The Diocese has now transferred the hall back to the community. This enabled work to be done to upgrade the hall and the work has now been completed.
The hall had no major works done since it was built almost 60 years ago. To bring it up to modern day health and safety standards the asbestos roof has been renewed and replaced, we have complete new electrics, new plumbing, new heating, a new kitchen and new bathroom facilities, plus an additional room, small hall and storage. We would like to thank all our excellent contractors for the superb work that has been done and to our architect that oversaw the work for the whole of its duration.
This work cost approximately €307,000. We were fortunate that we received a grant of 75% - which gave us an amount of just under €224,000. The committee had to find the balance. This grant was given to us by An Roinn Gnóthaí Pobail, Comhionannais agus Gaeltachta.
Some of this grant money is being withheld but we hope to draw down the money as soon as possible. This is due to the necessity to take out a Deed of Covenant with the Minister of the Department and that the Department is sure that we are carrying out our commitment to them to encourage, promote and revive the Irish language in the centre and that we continue to do so.
We will need to fund raise for sometime so as to bridge the gap between the grant and the money that we have previously raised. To do this the committee took out a loan for €40,000 which we have to pay back over the next 5 years or sooner if we can. We thank you for all for your support to date – we are very grateful. We hope that you will continue to support us in our fund raising activities to pay off the loan and complete any other works such as extra car parking facilities and the ongoing maintenance that will need to be done in the future.
We are all aware that funding for projects is now more difficult to obtain and we are aware that everyone is under new pressures because of the current state of the economy.
Again everyone is thanked for their help and support in attending functions, helping out and indeed the previous great support we have had for fundraising which also goes towards helping us with our substantially increased overheads. We are now in the process of arranging extra events and activities in the hall. If anyone would like to help us in any way or have ideas for fund raising please get in touch with a member of the committee. If you wish to look around the hall please call in.
