Sad death in Tourmakeady
THE death took place on Thursday, September 24, at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, in his 87th year, of Tomas O’hEanachain, Tawnagh, Srah, Tourmakeady, surrounded by his wife Joan (nee O’Neill, Ballinrobe) and his entire and devoted family.
Tomas or Tom and known locally as Tommy Johnny, was in failing health for many years but he still kept very active and involved.
He spent 40 of his years as a primary school teacher in Srah national school (1947-1953) and Mayo Abbey (1953-1955) and he was principal at Lankhill (nee Westport, 1955-1974) and completed his career in Killawalla from 1974 until retirement in 1987.
Tom met many friends and left many memories and many of his past pupils attended his final farewell.
Outside the classroom Tom was involved in community activities and promoting his native Tourmakeady. He ran as independent for Mayo County Council, in 1955 and was a founder member of Coiste Pobail Tuar Mhic Éadaigh, in 1973 and the C.D.S. Also of Ballinrobe livestock mart, Western Care and the well-known Tourmakeady group water scheme, in 1981.
He was one of the hard working committee members who saved Coláiste Muire. He invested in Gaeltarra Eireann to keep it going for the community. He was committed to the Irish language and was a member of Conradh Na Gailge and Glór na nGael. Also Coiste Radio Na Gaeltachta and Cearta Na Gaeltachta.
He was interested in local history debates and contributed articles to each of the 22 Waterfall Magazines.
Huge crowds visited the house and attended Tom’s removal to St. Mary’s church, Tourmakeady, for Mass on Saturday, September 26, celebrated by Fr. Padraig Standún cc Tourmakeady, assisted by Canon Desmond Grogan, Partry and Fr. Costello SMA Galway and Ballinrobe. Requiem hymns were sung by Siobhan Dé Burca, daughter of Padraig O’hEanachain, son. The psalm was sung beautifully by Liam Dé Burca, son-in-law.
Burial took place after communion reflection given by Tomas O’hEanachain.
