Thomas was a hard-working man who never knew the meaning of ‘no’. He could turn his hand to any job, be it in Chicago, in his younger days, or, Cappaduff, later. He was a keen, tidy operator, whether digging a foundation, cutting hay, or helping a neighbour. He loved his family and in later years had a place in his heart for his 22 grandchildren.
Huge crowds attended his final farewell from all parts of Ireland and England. His remains were removed from St. Mary’s Funeral Home to Tourmakeady Church, where they were received by Fr. John Kenny, P.P., and the Castlebar Gospel Choir.
Again, on Thursday, a packed church attended the Mass, celebrated by Fr. Declan Carroll, Fr. Pat Farragher, Castlebar, and Fr. John McCormack, Breaffy. All the readings were given by Thomas’s grandchildren, nieces and nephews also took part in the choir.
The meaningful and lovely reflection was given by his daughters, Marie Treasa and Catherine Anne, the girls were joined by well-known family friend, Matt Keane, with the rendering of “Raise Him Up” and “Sweet Forget Me Not”. Tomas O Maille also gave the graveside oration in the new cemetery beside the church.
Thomas is survived by his widow Bridget, daughters Mary Teresa and son-in-law Vincent Daly, Ballynew, Castlebar, daughter Catherine Ann Staunton, sons Kevin, Cappaduff, Hughie, Chicago, Eddie and daughter-in-law Kathleen, Breaffy, Castlebar, Gerry and daughter-in-law Carmel, John and daughter-in-law Maureen, Pat and daughter-in-law Carmel, Tommy Joe and daughter-in-law Bernie, all in Chicago, sister Kathleen Staunton, Drimcoggy, Tourmakeady, sisters-in-law Mary Heneghan, Nora Lally and Kathleen Lally all Parkridge, Chicago, and 22 grandchildren, also nieces and nephews, neighbours and friends.
