Thanks
The Multiple Sclerosis Association would like to thank all collectors and contributors in The Bunaun, Tourmakeady, for a total of €331.07.
The Coiste Pobail Thuar Mhic Éadaigh Teo is delighted to announce that it has been advised by Mayo County Council that work will commence in the next couple of months to construct a pedestrian crossing in Tourmakeady. It will be next to Páirc Spraoi (the new recreational park). This is one of the many road safety initiatives that were negotiated by the Coiste Pobail Thuar Mhic Éadaigh Teo after many meetings with the council and their officials.
Údarás Na Gaeltachta At their board meeting last week Údarás Na Gaeltachta approved finance to over 30 community based organisations throughout the Gaeltacht to support them in the implementation of their annual work plans through this year. Coiste Cultúr Teanga agus Forbartha Thuar Mhic Éadaigh Teo, which is one of the 30 community based organisations would like to acknowledge and thank Údarás again for this much appreciated administration grant. It means that we can continue to employ the services of the Development Manager, Nora McHugh, who is based in Halla Tourmakeady.
This important annual contribution has provided Coiste Cultúr Teanga agus Forbartha Thuar Mhic Éadaigh Teo with the means to support costs, activities and projects in the area, which are ongoing.
Coiste Cultúr Teanga agus Forbartha Thuar Mhic Éadaigh Teo would like to acknowledge the benefits of the ex Garda station, which due to circumstances beyond the control of the community was closed down. Even though Tourmakeady made very strong representations to keep the station manned, as a community we had no say when it came to closure. Coiste Cultúr Teanga agus Forbartha Thuar Mhic Éadaigh Teo is aware of the great disappointment to the community at the loss of the station.
However, in the event of its closure and rather than let the building be empty, we made an application to the OPW (Office of Public Works) for transfer of the building on lease to the community. We intend to use this valued amenity as a tourist and visitor centre and to support community activities, culture, genealogy and heritage. We hope to have the support of the community and indeed we have the wholehearted support of the Garda station, in Partry and our previous Garda, who with others still initiate and provide ongoing patrols throughout the area. It is hoped that it will become an asset for all of us in Tourmakeady.

The Coiste Pobail Thuar Mhic Éadaigh Teo is delighted to announce that we have been advised by Mayo County Council that work will commence in the next couple of months to construct a pedestrian crossing in Tourmakeady. It will be next to Páirc Spraoi (the new recreational park). This is one of the many road safety initiatives that were negotiated by the Coiste Pobail Thuar Mhic Éadaigh Teo after many meetings with the Council and their officials. A committment was sought during and after the recreational park works had been completed. We would like to sincerely thank all the councillors that donated towards this project and to the official that proceeded with it. It is good news for the community in Tourmakeady.
At their Board Meeting last week Údarás na Gaeltachta approved finance to over 30 community based organisations throughout the Gaeltacht to support them in the implementation of their annual work plans through 2014. Coiste Cultúr Teanga agus Forbartha Thuar Mhic Éadaigh Teo which is one of the 30 community based organisations would like to acknowledge and thank Údarás again for this much appreciated administration grant. It means that we can continue to employ the services of the Development Manager who is based in Halla Tourmakeady. This important annual contribution has provided Coiste Cultúr Teanga agus Forbartha Thuar Mhic Éadaigh Teo with the means to support activities and projects in the area which are ongoing.
Coiste Cultúr Teanga agus Forbartha Thuar Mhic Éadaigh Teo would like to acknowledge the benefits of the ex Garda station which due to circumstances beyond the control of our community was closed down. Even though Tourmakeady made very strong representations to keep the Garda station manned, as a community we had no say when it came to its closure. Coiste Cultúr Teanga agus Forbartha Thuar Mhic Éadaigh Teo is aware of the great disappointment to the community at the loss of our own Garda station. However, in the event of its closure and rather than let the building be empty we made an application to the OPW for transfer of the building on lease to the community. We intend now to use this valued amenity as a Tourist and Visitor Centre and to support community activities, culture, genealogy and heritage. We hope to have the support of the community and indeed we have the wholehearted support of the Garda station in Partry and our previous Garda who with others still initiate and provide ongoing patrols throughout the area.
Essentially we believe if we couldn’t have a fully operational Garda station then lets use it to the benefit of the community and we hope, over the years, it will become an asset for us all in Tourmakeady.

Double bereavement
In the first week in February, the Ronan family, of Lower Churchfield, Tourmakeady, were hit by a double bereavement On Friday, February 7, Gerry Ronan died suddenly in London, in his 54th year and less than 24 hours later his mother Philomena Ronan passed away in similar circumstances. She was in her 80s.
Huge crowds attended at Tourmakeady Hall for the double wake of Gerry and Philomena. It was a scene not witnessed for many decades in Tourmakeady. Emotions ran high as both remains were removed to St. Mary’s Church, Tourmakeady.
On Sunday, the crowd overflowed on to the churchyard, as the Mass celebrated by Fr. John Kenny P.P. assisted by Fr. Des Grogan took place. Readings were given by Mary Walsh and her daughter Louise Walsh. Music was presented by Padraig Durcan. Dermot Ronan gave a lovely communion reflection.
They were laid to rest side-by-side, in Churchfield Cemetery. Sincere sympathy is extended to John and Ann Ronan, who cared so well for Philomena in her final years of illness. Also to Mary, Ann, Eileen and Dermot, grandchildren, sister and brother of Philomena, extended family members, neighbours and friends. May their souls rest in peace.
