Greetings from Aine Staunton in Tanzania
WRITES Aine Staunton from Tanzania: “All is good here; no major complaints at the minute. We are expecting the long rains any week now. The villagers are longing for rain as a lot of their crops have died in the last few months due to shortages. We often don’t have water in our house, but it’s just a norm over here and something one learns to live with.
“We have school mock exams in May and I am quite anxious about them and for the students as I feel we have not had enough time with them yet and they are far from up to speed with what is expected of them in the exams. All I can do though is try my best, and the same for them.
“We went to a St. Patrick’s Day ball on March 19 hosted by the Irish Embassy in Dar Es Salaam. It is about a nine- or 10-hour bus journey from where I am now but it was great to meet some other Irish people living here in Tanzania.
“I am very grateful to the community for organising the table quiz this weekend. I’m not certain what to spend the money on yet, but I know families are struggling to pay for exam fees and school lunch, etc., and we don’t have the core text books which are needed either, not even one copy for ourselves, so I will probably purchase some supplies like that.
“Also the blackboards are in terrible condition – I might try and sort them out. We are also trying to set up a library. So many things to try and get done and time is flying by.”
