FOLLOWING the recent meeting it was agreed to start the knitting circle in January 2010. There has been a lot of interest. The circle will concentrate on knitting and crochet. Contact will be made in January to set a date and time. There is also interest in Patchwork, and it is anticipated that this will start later in the year. Thank you to everyone that attended. As part of Mayo in Motion, Mayo Walking Partnership in association with Mayo Sports Partnership and Tourmakeady Community Group we will be running this programme in the Spring 2010. The Fit Walking Clinic will teach participants how to optimise every ounce of fitness from walking. More details in the New Year.

Masters All-Ireland medal celebrations
ONCE again Tourmakeady GAA club had reason to celebrate at the weekend when one of its outstanding footballers took home a well earned masters All-Ireland medal.
It was the first of many for Michael John Walsh hopefully and a well deserved achievement for this committed footballer. He is dedicated to his club and also the green and red of Mayo.
Playing in a relatively new position for Michael John, at centre field, he was on the score board in most games.
In the final Mayo defeated a strong Tyrone team 1-8 to 0-7. Seven days earlier Mayo outclassed Dublin 1-15 to 0-5.
Michael John already has county and Connaught intermediate medals and now the All-Ireland masters. He follows in the footsteps of Tom Heneghan, who has four masters to his credit. Congratulations to Michael John from the community and especially from his GAA team club members and supporters.
Partry residents bonus number game
THE latest winners of the Partry residents bonus number game are Josephine Mitchell Daly and Francis and Martin O’Neill. Both families receive €100 each. Five hundred litres of heating oil was also given away on the December 19, draw. Well done to all the winners and also to Texoil for the sponsorship. The next draw is on Saturday, December 26.
Partry Athletic soccer club awards night
PARTRY Athletic soccer club is having their awards and social night on Saturday, January 2, 2010, at the Lough Inn, Partry. Tickets and details are available from Barry Bourke or Vincent Horan. The annual St. Stephen’s Day game is at 2.30 p.m. and all money raised will go to the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice fund.
Bereavement
THE death has taken place of Paddy Heneghan, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Formerly of Drimcoggie, Srah, he was brother of Mary Staunton, Drimcoggie; Michael Heneghan, Ballygarry and Nora Walsh, Killawalla, Westport. He is survived in the United States by his wife Madeleine and family. Paddy will be laid to rest on Tuesday, December 22. May his soul rest in peace.
Fundraising in Marie Luke’s for Galway victims of flooding
A BIG crowd is expected on Wednesday, December 23, at Maire Luke’s Bar and Restaurant, for a fundraiser in aid of the Galway victims of the recent flooding. Admission will be free. There will be a donation box on the night. There will be many raffle prizes on offer. Musicians from many parts will gather for this traditional style fundraiser. The entire community is asked to support it.
There is also a top class music programme on St. Stephen’s night and new year’s eve.
On St. Stephen’s night, Cois Tina will be on stage and on new year’s night there is the Paddy Hoban show, followed by a disco special.

On Sunday, December 20, a traditional night will be held with musicians welcome and the show will start at 8 p.m.

Annual Christmas céilí
CEAD Mile Failte to the annual Christmas céilí, on Saturday night, December 19, at Partry community hall, with the brilliant Matt Cunningham on stage.
It is always a super night at this popular dance venue, with raffles, refreshments and lots of craic on offer. All proceeds from the night will go to the Ballinrobe branch of Mayo Mental Health organisation. Meet all your friends. The doors open at 10 p.m. sharp.

TOURMAKEADY GAA club are holding a table quiz at O’Tooles, on Saturday night, December 19. All clubs in the area are asked to enter a table. It is €40 for a table of four. The first question is at 9.30 p.m. A raffle will also take place.

ALL shops are now restocked with the 23rd annual Waterfall magazine, with record sales last weekend. A full supply is now available but there will be no reprint. It is the biggest issue to date, so purchase your copy now to avoid disappointment.
Bereavement
THE death has taken place on Wednesday, December 9, in his 87th year of Mr. Tommie Gavin, Treenlaur, Tourmakeady, following a brief illness.
Tommie was a well-known, hard-working man of the Tourmakeady area and especially in and around the Colaisti Mhuire, Tourmakeady, where he spent the major part of his active life when farming was a big part of the life of Colaisti Mhuire.
A native of Belcarra, Tommie married Balla native Noreen Maher, in the mid 50s. They settled in Treenlaur, overlooking Lough Mask.
Tommie was a dance hall manager, driving instructor, at Colaisti Mhuire, band leader and taxi driver. He loved music and often obliged at short notice to be in the local hall or St. Mary’s church. He could play many instruments with style and to a high standard.
He was interested in the world of politics and loved all types of sports. He wore the black and white of Tourmakeady and the green and red of Mayo.
A large crowd turned out to say farewell to a great friend and support his wife Noreen and family.
His remains were removed from St. Mary’s funeral home, Tourmakeady, to Tourmakeady church, where they were received by Fr. Padraig Standún cc, Tourmakeady.
On Saturday, the midday funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Padraig Standún cc Tourmakeady, assisted by Canon Desmond Grogan, Partry.
Readings and requiem hymns were given in a meaningful and beautiful way by his family and grandchildren.
Tommie is survived by his wife Noreen, daughters Ann and son-in-law Brian English, Dolores and son-in-law John Doyle; sons Adrian and daughter-in-law, Mary Joe and Paul and Martina; Tomas and Helen; Diarmuid and Deirdre; his sister Nellie, Cork and grandchildren and extended family. May his soul rest in peace.
Swimming in Castlebar
THERE will be no swimming at Castlebar pool until further notice. This is due to unforeseen circumstances at the pool. All parents and swimmers are asked to take note.
GAA local lotto
THERE was no winner of the Tourmakeady GAA local lotto, held on Saturday, December 12. The numbers chosen were 5, 13, 29 and 32. Consolation prizes went to Sean O’Conghaile, Caislean a Bharrigh; Mick Dunne, Gortinmore; Kay Sweeney, John Hession (snr) and Michael John Casey, Carheen. The next draw is at Paddy’s, Tourmakeady, on Saturday, December 19, with Danny Lydon and team K on duty.
New baby
CONGRATULATIONS to Philomena and Joe Heneghan, Churchfield, Tourmakeady, on the birth of their first baby, a girl Ailish, at the Mayo General Hospital. She is a welcome Christmas baby to grandparents Patricia and Tommie Heneghan, Churchfield and Moya and John McConville, Dundalk. Also to great grandmother Maureen Heneghan, Tawnagh, Srah.

On Wednesday, December 23 there is a special night for the Galway flood victims and donations would be welcome. There is no admission charge only a donation box. There will be a raffle and great prizes. Support is requested for this worthy cause.

Bereavement
THE death has taken place on Wednesday, December 9, in his 87th year of Mr. Tommie Gavin, Treenlaur, Tourmakeady, following a brief illness.
Tommie was a well-known, hard-working man of the Tourmakeady area and especially in and around the Colaisti Mhuire, Tourmakeady, where he spent the major part of his active life when farming was a big part of the life of Colaisti Mhuire.
A native of Belcarra, Tommie married Balla native Noreen Maher, in the mid 50s. They settled in Treenlaur, overlooking Lough Mask.
Tommie was a dance hall manager, driving instructor, at Colaisti Mhuire, band leader and taxi driver. He loved music and often obliged at short notice to be in the local hall or St. Mary’s church. He could play many instruments with style and to a high standard.
He was interested in the world of politics and loved all types of sports. He wore the black and white of Tourmakeady and the green and red of Mayo.
A large crowd turned out to say farewell to a great friend and support his wife Noreen and family.
His remains were removed from St. Mary’s funeral home, Tourmakeady, to Tourmakeady church, where they were received by Fr. Padraig Standún cc, Tourmakeady.
On Saturday, the midday funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Padraig Standún cc Tourmakeady, assisted by Canon Desmond Grogan, Partry.
Readings and requiem hymns were given in a meaningful and beautiful way by his family and grandchildren.
Tommie is survived by his wife Noreen, daughters Ann and son-in-law Brian English, Dolores and son-in-law John Doyle; sons Adrian and daughter-in-law, Mary Joe and Paul and Martina; Tomas and Helen; Diarmuid and Deirdre; his sister Nellie, Cork and grandchildren and extended family. May his soul rest in peace.
Swimming in Castlebar
THERE will be no swimming at Castlebar pool until further notice. This is due to unforeseen circumstances at the pool. All parents and swimmers are asked to take note.

THE latest winners of the Partry residents bonus number game are Martin and Francis O’Neill and Josephine Mitchell Daly, who both had number 5, on December 12. Winners on December 5, were Michael Kelly and Peter McMurray. They both chose number 36. All four families receive €100 and the next draw is on Saturday, December 19, at 8 p.m.
Mayo masters victory
CONGRATULATIONS to Tourmakeady footballer Michael John Walsh, who starred on the Mayo masters victory over Dublin, on Saturday. Michael John scored the only goal of the game. The final score was 1-15 to Dublin 0-5. Please support the final at the weekend.

THE West of Ireland Alzheimers Association wish to thank everyone who donated to their recent church gate collection. The amount collected was €352.
Bereavement
THE death took place on November 25, in the loving care of the staff of Mayo General Hospital, of Paddy King, Treen, Tourmakeady, following an illness. He was in his early 80s.
Paddy was a native of Cashel, Co. Galway and having worked as a young boy in Litermore, Galway, arrived in Tourmakeady, in his teenage years to work in the well-known O’Tooles, of Tourmakeady.
Paddy was also a well-known figure there for over 50 years until his retirement. He was well liked, dedicated, intelligent and he loved to converse with his customers. He has his own views and gave his opinion in no small way.
He also loved is home and family, having married a great Bangor Erris woman, Bridie Neary, in the mid 50s. They were blessed with four wonderful children and Paddy was very proud of them.
They set up one of Tourmakeady’s first bed and breakfast accommodations ‘Mask View’, and Paddy took a special interest in it. It had magnificent grounds. They catered for customers and fishermen from throughout the world. One of the most notable was the late president of Ireland, Mr. O’Dálaigh, on his official visit to Tourmakeady.
Paddy was a religious man and he was faithful to the sacraments and while at work, everything stood still at 12 noon and 6 p.m. for the Angelus.
His remains were removed from St. Mary’s funeral home to St. Mary’s church, Tourmakeady. Burial took place on Saturday, following 12 noon Mass, celebrated by Fr. Padraig Standún cc, Tourmakeady; assisted by Canon Desmond Grogan, Partry and Fr. Tommie Brady, army chaplain, Galway. Readings were by Shauna King, granddaughter and Imelda King, daughter. Pslams were sung by Emer King, daughter. Prayers of the faithful were given by grandchildren Danny King, Eoin Kelly, Aisling Kelly, Aoife King and Tara Kelly. Gifts were taken to the altar by John and Declan King, his sons and Aoife King and Tara Kelly, granddaughters. The Eulogy was delivered by Declan King, his son. Requiem hymns were sung by the Church of the Irish Martyrs choir, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal.
The King family wish to thank all the extended family and neighbours, staff at the Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, for all their kindnesses to Paddy and also to everyone who called to the house and attended his final journey.
Paddy is survived by his wife Bridie, daughter Emer and son-in-law Damien Kelly; daughter Imelda and partner Imor Gavin; son John and Celine King and son Declan and Leah Benson. Also grandchildren Shauna, Danny, Aoife King, Eoin, Aisling and Tara Kelly, nieces and nephews, Carmel and Linda, Susan, John, Mary and Ann, brothers-in-law, Patrick, Jim, Denny, Martin, Sean, Eddie and Colm Neary, sisters-in-law Mary and Susan King, Vera Madden, Mary Kennedy and Margaret Dooley.
There will be Mass for Paddy King, on Friday, December 11, in Tourmakeady, at 6.30 p.m. May his soul rest in peace.

New venture lambdirect launched
CONGRATULATIONS and good luck to the four farmers of Tourmakeady, who have launched a brand new venture entitled lamb direct. Lamb reared in Tourmakeady will be delivered to your home. There are plans to extend the project.
The farmers are John Joyce, Philip Staunton, Seamus Hughes and Tom Staunton. They represent a 50 per cent stake in the venture, with four other farmers from Westport also on board.
A quality product, produced locally and cheaper than other products is being offered and local support for the venture is requested.

New venture lambdirect launched
CONGRATULATIONS and good luck to the four farmers of Tourmakeady, who have launched a brand new venture entitled lamb direct. Lamb reared in Tourmakeady will be delivered to your home. There are plans to extend the project.
The farmers are John Joyce, Philip Staunton, Seamus Hughes and Tom Staunton. They represent a 50 per cent stake in the venture, with four other farmers from Westport also on board.
A quality product, produced locally and cheaper than other products is being offered and local support for the venture is requested.
Orders are being taken from hotels, shops, restaurants, or homes, from Maura, at (094) 95 44163 or www.lambdirect.ie.
Double CD on sale
A double CD of Irish music, song and dance, produced by Acadmh na hOllscolaíocht Gaeile, NUI Galway, is on sale, with proceeds going to Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children Crumlin, Dublin. Christmas 25 drive
A CHRISTMAS 25 drive will take place at Máire Luke’s, Tourmakeady, on Thursday, December 3, at 9 p.m.
On Friday, December 4, there is a 21st birthday party and on Sunday, December 6, at 8.30 p.m. there is a traditional music and song session.
The restaurant is open on Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and there is a special Sunday lunch. Booking is advised at (094) 9544080.
Christmas disco
A CHRISTMAS disco will be held in Tourmakeady hall, on Friday, December 4, at 9 p.m. to 11.45 p.m. It is being organised by Club - Óige Tuar Mhic Éadaigh and everyone is welcome.
Church missions
BALLYOVEY Mission is underway in the Tourmakeady and Partry churches. Mass each day is at 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. and mission is on every evening, at 8 p.m. in both churches.
A full turnout is requested for the evening sessions and everyone is asked to work around the mission for this week, including club and community activities. It will close on Saturday, at 7 p.m. in Partry and 8 p.m. in Tourmakeady. The visiting priests are Fr. Michael Cusack and Fr. Clement MacManus. All activities in the parish should be arranged around the mission times for this week and a good turnout is expected by the visiting priests.
Santa Claus is coming to Tourmakeady
SANTA Claus will arrive in Tourmakeady at the hall to meet the children of Tourmakeady, on Sunday, December 6, after 11.30 a.m. Mass. Santa will be leaving the hall at approximately 2.15pm Make it a date - cakes, raffles and games.
GAA annual general meeting
TOURMAKEADY GAA club annual general meeting will be held on Sunday, December 6, at 7 p.m. in the clubhouse, of Pairc Naoimh Muire.
The club will look back on 2009 and look forward hopefully to a better 2010. All managers and Underage teams are urgently requested to be in attendance. And, all members are invited. The clubhouse is heated.

FOLLOWING the recent meeting it was agreed to start the knitting circle in January 2010. There has been a lot of interest. The circle will concentrate on knitting and crochet. Bereavement
THE death has taken place in New York, USA, of Padraig Forde, formerly of Riverstown, Co. Sligo. He was husband of Eileen Meeneghan, Gortfree, Tourmakeady.
Padraig was laid to rest in Riverstown, Co. Sligo, on Saturday, November 21.
Also the death took place in Wales, of Mr. Paddy Casey, whose ancestors came from Glensaul, Tourmakeady. He was nephew of Ann Maree, Upper Churchfield, Tourmakeady. May their souls rest in peace.
Also the death has taken place of Mr. Paddy King, Trean, Tourmakeady, on Wednesday, November 25. He was laid to rest in Churchfield cemetery, on Saturday, November 28. Paddy is survived by his wife Bridie, two daughters, two sons and extended family
