JOIN us for an opportunity to make your own St Brigid’s Cross the way that families in the past used to make them to protect themselves for the year ahead. Bereavement
THE death has taken place of Philomena Cafferkey, 74 Lake Shore Drive, Castlebar and formerly Philomena Lally, daughter of the late Nora and Tom Lally, Shangort, Srah, Tourmakeady.
Philomena was a kind, caring and helpful wife, mother, sister and neighbour and this was evident as large crowds paid their respects from many parts of Mayo and beyond.
Her remains were removed from Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, on Sunday, January 2, 2011, to St. Mary’s Church, Tourmakeady and received by Fr. John Kenny p.p. and Archbishop Michael Neary, Tuam.
On Monday, at 9 a.m. the church at Tourmakeady was again packed for the funeral Mass, celebrated by Fr. John Kenny p.p. assisted by Fr. Pat Farragher c.c. Castlebar and Fr. Desmond Grogan, Partry.
Readings were by Philomena’s nieces and the choir was made up of family and friends. The emotional reflections were sung and spoken by Philomena’s son Michéal and daughter Máiread.
Following the final blessings, her remains made way to Glasnevin Crematorium, Dublin.
Philomena is survived by her husband Michael, son Michéal, daughter Máiread; sister Peggy Power, Tourmakeady; brothers Paddy, Partry; Martin Shangort, Tourmakeady; Michael, Sligo; Sean, Chicago and also nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and extended family members.
Philomena was sister-in-law to Michael Power, Tourmakeady and Monica Lally, Partry. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Wish to thank all the building contractors that worked on the hall during the renovation work that took place during 2010. In addition to revamping the existing hall we have a new roof, a new small hall, a new kitchen, a new exercise area, new ladies, gents and children toilets and new storage area. We have new electrics, plumbing, flooring, and tasteful decoration. Halla Thuar Mhic Éadaigh sincerely thanks our architect Philip Staunton for overseeing all the work and to contractors Culeen Construction, John O’Brien, Pat Burke, Michael O’Malley. We thank them for their help and support. We also would like to thank the RSS and FAS schemes that have helped us in and around the hall and have offered and shown great community spirit. New Tús work placement opportunities in the community sector
The Minister for Social Protection has announced the arrangements for the Government's new work placement initiative in the community sector. The initiative known as Tús, will provide 5,000 short term working opportunities for people unemployed for over a year. TOURMAKEADY GAA lotto jackpot is now at €7,000. Tickets are on sale throughout the parish at the usual outlets.
The numbers chosen last week were 1, 7, 12 and 15. The consolation winners were Angelina Donoghue, Gortmore; John Ronan, Churchfield; Frank Philbin, Gortmore; Padraig O’hEanachain, Gortinmore and Martin Mulroe, Greenaun.
There was no outright winner of the Tourmakeady Christmas lotto, held at the Lough Inn, Partry. The numbers chosen were 11, 12, 26 and 31. The consolation winners were Michael Farragher, Partry; Rosaline Ward, The Lough Inn, Peter Rush, c/o Máire Lukes; Mark Conway, Tooreen and Peter Gibbons, Kilfaul. Death in England
THE death has taken place in England during the week of Mr. Michael Morrin, son of the late John and Lizzy Morrin, formerly of Ballybannon, Tourmakeady.
Michael was a regular visitor to Tourmakeady in his younger days, where he had many relations.
Burial takes place later this month. Michael is survived by his wife Freda and family in England, his brother Sean, in Dublin and extended family members. May his soul rest in peace.

New baby boy
CONGRATULATIONS to Barry O’Toole and Catriona, Tourmakeady and Ballinrobe, on the birth of their baby boy Jack, at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar. Jack is brother for Cian and grandson for Fionnuala Daly. He is great grandson for Bide and Tomas O’Toole, Tourmakeady.
Also to Tanya and Colm O’Conghaile, on the birth of their bouncing baby boy Colin, at Mayo General Hospital last week. Colin has taken up residence in Ballinrobe but gets a big Cead Mile Failte from his sister Cliona and his grandparents in Tourmakeady.

THE December 18, winners of the Partry bonus number game were Regina Mulrooney and Tommy Lally, both of whom receive €100 each and 500 litres of heating oil, for choosing number 25. There were 65 bales of briquettes, with €100 for the winners of the January 1, 2011 draw.

Important fundraising night
AN important fundraising night will take place at Paddy’s Bar and Restaurant, Tourmakeady, on Saturday, January 8. The proceeds of this special event will assist Ronan Rice, son of Dr. Noel and Delia Rice, Tourmakeady, who is embarking on voluntary work in a less well off country. It is a huge undertaking for this young man and deserves full support of the community in the Tourmakeady and surrounding areas.

Wish to thank all the building contractors that worked on the hall during the renovation work that took place during 2010. In addition to revamping the existing hall we have a new roof, a new small hall, a new kitchen, a new exercise area, new ladies, gents and children toilets and new storage area. We have new electrics, plumbing, flooring, and tasteful decoration. Halla Thuar Mhic Éadaigh sincerely thanks our architect Philip Staunton for overseeing all the work and to contractors Culeen Construction, John O’Brien, Pat Burke, Michael O’Malley. We thank them for their help and support. We also would like to thank the RSS and FAS schemes that have helped us in and around the hall and have offered and shown great community spirit. New Tús work placement opportunities in the community sector
The Minister for Social Protection has announced the arrangements for the Government's new work placement initiative in the community sector. The initiative known as Tús, will provide 5,000 short term working opportunities for people unemployed for over a year. The placements will be with community sector organisations to support the delivery of their services. See Department of Social Protection website www.welfare.ie

Irish Classes/Conversational Classes:
There will be Irish and Comhrá through Irish Classes starting in Halla Pobail Thuar Mhic Éadaigh before the end of January for those who want to learn and improve their Irish and for those who wish to converse in Irish. More details and start date next week.

The start date for Hip Hop Classes will be available shortly and everyone that has already put their name down on the list will be contacted.

The Over 60’s club will start back on Thursday, January 20, 2011 from 2.00pm to 5.00pm All welcome.
Weekly service to Castlebar
TAKE the hassle out of driving into town. There is a bus every Friday leaving O’Toole’s at 10.30 a.m. Free passes are accepted. It is open to all. Other collection points are available. It returns at approximately 3 p.m. Please support this worthwhile service.

A SOCIAL welfare officer will be in attendance every Wednesday between 12 noon and 1 p.m. at the Medical Centre, Tourmakeady.
Citizen’s advice
A CITIZENS information officer will be in attendance at Tourmakeady Hall, on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. with information on social welfare, health board payments, taxation, housing and single farm payments.
Special Christmas Fund Raiser for the Bunaún Oratory
Thank you to everyone for your support to raise funds for the Bunaún Oratory. The money raised which was €1178 will go towards work carried out recently on the building.

GAA lotto jackpot reaches €7,000
TOURMAKEADY GAA lotto jackpot is now at €7,000. Tickets are on sale throughout the parish at the usual outlets.
The numbers chosen last week were 1, 7, 12 and 15. The consolation winners were Angelina Donoghue, Gortmore; John Ronan, Churchfield; Frank Philbin, Gortmore; Padraig O’hEanachain, Gortinmore and Martin Mulroe, Greenaun.
There was no outright winner of the Tourmakeady Christmas lotto, held at the Lough Inn, Partry. The numbers chosen were 11, 12, 26 and 31. The consolation winners were Michael Farragher, Partry; Rosaline Ward, The Lough Inn, Peter Rush, c/o Máire Lukes; Mark Conway, Tooreen and Peter Gibbons, Kilfaul. Tickets are €2 or €5 for three tickets. Silver circle tickets are available for 2011 for a once off payment.
Death in England
THE death has taken place in England during the week of Mr. Michael Morrin, son of the late John and Lizzy Morrin, formerly of Ballybannon, Tourmakeady.
Michael was a regular visitor to Tourmakeady in his younger days, where he had many relations.
Burial takes place later this month. Michael is survived by his wife Freda and family in England, his brother Sean, in Dublin and extended family members. May his soul rest in peace.
Tourmakeady hall bonus number game winners
WINNERS of the December 18, Tourmakeady hall bonus number game were Sara and Seamus Lally, Tawnagh and Niall and Cathy Tiernan, Drimcoggy. Both couples receive €100 each for choosing lucky number 25. Congratulations to all the 2010 winners and good luck in the 2011 series of draws.
Well done to Helen and Martin Heneghan, Gortnacullin and Julie and Frank Lally, Tawnagh, who are the first winners of 2011, in the Tourmakeady hall bonus number draw. Both couples receive €100 each for choosing number 44. The next draw is on Saturday, January 8, at 9 p.m. All outstanding payments should be made to Sally or Kathleen Gibbons.
D. J. Brian on stage at Máire Lukes
ON stage at Máire Lukes Bar and Restaurant on Wednesday night, January 5, is D. J. Brian. A big crowd is expected to welcome the local D. J. to Máire Lukes.
The Tourmakeady GAA dinner dance takes place on Saturday, January 29, at Máire Lukes. Tickets are on sale now. It is advisable to buy early because of the successful year, a sell-out is expected.
New baby boy
CONGRATULATIONS to Barry O’Toole and Catriona, Tourmakeady and Ballinrobe, on the birth of their baby boy Jack, at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar. Jack is brother for Cian and grandson for Fionnuala Daly. He is great grandson for Bide and Tomas O’Toole, Tourmakeady.
Also to Tanya and Colm O’Conghaile, on the birth of their bouncing baby boy Colin, at Mayo General Hospital last week. Colin has taken up residence in Ballinrobe but gets a big Cead Mile Failte from his sister Cliona and his grandparents in Tourmakeady.
Partry residents bonus number game
THE December 18, winners of the Partry bonus number game were Regina Mulrooney and Tommy Lally, both of whom receive €100 each and 500 litres of heating oil, for choosing number 25. There were 65 bales of briquettes, with €100 for the winners of the January 1, 2011 draw.
Engagement congratulations
HEARTIEST congratulations to Noreen Mulroe, daughter of Annie and Paddy Mulroe, Letterineen, Tourmakeady, on her engagement to Mr. David Cregg, at the weekend. Both communities unite in wishing Noreen and David best wishes in the new decade and the future.
Also to Carl Conroy, son of Mary and Liam Conroy, Trianlair, Tourmakeady, on his engagement to Ms. Aisling Morrison, Cork, at Christmas. Good luck and happiness to this couple in their future plans.
Arrival of hoodies
THE first consignment of hoodies and jackets ordered in early December has now arrived, although some items were temporarily out of stock. The next consignment is due to arrive in the third week in January.
Church rota
MASS for the feast of the Epiphany will be celebrated on Thursday, January 6, at 10 a.m. in Partry and 11.30 a.m. in Tourmakeady and on Wednesday, January 5, at 8 p.m. in Tourmakeady.
A big thank you is extended to Fr. John Kenny p.p. for all his efforts in his first season at Party-Tourmakeady parish. Also to the choirs in both churches. Mass in Partry can now be heard on radio, at 106.5 F.M.
Eddie Gibbons will read at the 8 p.m. Mass in Tourmakeady, on Saturday, January 8. Eucharistic Ministers are Brid Heneghan and Julie Lally. Siobhan De Burca will read at the 11.30 a.m. Sunday Mass. Eucharistic Ministers are Martin O’Neill and Sadie Molloy.
Waterfall Magazines
THERE are still a number of Waterfall Magazines on sale in the usual shops, Corrigans, Ballintubber; The Village Inn, Partry; O’Tooles and The Lough Mask Inn, Tourmakeady; Martin Murphy’s and Cummins, Ballinrobe and Walsh’s post office, Killawalla. If anyone is returning to another country, they are asked to take one back home. They are still only €8 each and they can be posted anywhere for €4.50.
Important fundraising night
AN important fundraising night will take place at Paddy’s Bar and Restaurant, Tourmakeady, on Saturday, January 8. The proceeds of this special event will assist Ronan Rice, son of Dr. Noel and Delia Rice, Tourmakeady, who is embarking on voluntary work in a less well off country. It is a huge undertaking for this young man and deserves full support of the community in the Tourmakeady and surrounding areas.
Tickets for the meal can be reserved by calling (094) 9544005. It is open to the general public at 10.30 p.m. and everyone is welcome. It is advisable to book prior to January 7, as the meal tickets are expected to sell out. Ronan Rice is wished much success in his work.

THE Village Inn restaurant is open on Wednesday and Thursday, from 2 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. and Friday, from 2 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. and on Saturday, from 2 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. and on Sunday, from 12 noon until 6 p.m. The restaurant is closed on Monday and Tuesday.
